The scorching summer heat has many people wondering if Earth is closer to the Sun. But NASA Ambassador Tony Rice clarifies that the opposite is true. Despite record-breaking temperatures, Earth is actually moving further away from the Sun. This phenomenon occurs because Earth reaches its farthest point from the Sun, known as aphelion, around July 6th each year. This year, aphelion will bring Earth to approximately 94.5 million miles from the Sun. This distance is about 3.3% farther than its closest point, perihelion, which occurred in early January. While this change in distance does affect the amount of solar energy reaching Earth, it is not the primary cause of seasons. The axial tilt of Earth, at 23.4 degrees, plays a much more significant role. During June, the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun, resulting in more direct sunlight and longer daylight hours in regions like North Carolina. This tilt leads to the summer solstice, where Raleigh experiences nearly fifteen hours of daylight, compared to less than ten hours during the winter solstice. The combination of a higher Sun angle and extended daylight hours allows for more solar energy to reach the Earth's surface, making summer the hottest season despite Earth's increased distance from the Sun. This counterintuitive observation highlights the importance of Earth's axial tilt in determining seasons, rather than its distance from the Sun. As temperatures soar and Earth approaches aphelion, it's a reminder that the geometry of Earth's tilt is the dominant factor in seasonal changes, not the planet's distance from the Sun.
