From 5am Swims to Uni Life: Amy Owenson's Journey Balancing Sport & Studies at Stirling University (2026)

When it comes to pursuing excellence in sports, the journey is rarely linear. In the case of Amy Owenson, a young swimmer from Galashiels, the decision to attend university presented an unexpected crossroads.

Amy's story is a testament to the diverse paths athletes can take, showcasing the rich tapestry of sporting talent in the Scottish Borders. From mountain biking to netball, the region boasts an impressive array of sports and athletes, each with their unique narratives.

The Intersection of Sport and Life

For Amy, the transition from school to university meant reconsidering her dedication to early morning swim sessions. After years of 5 a.m. alarms and rigorous training, she opted for a change of pace.

"I had to decide between continuing my intense training routine or taking a step back to explore university life fully. It was a tough choice, but I'm glad I chose the latter," Amy shared.

A New Chapter at Stirling

Now a student at the University of Stirling, Amy is studying sport and exercise science. Her journey with swimming began at the tender age of eight, and she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a prominent member of the Gala Swimming Club and the Borders Elite Swim Team (BEST).

The challenges of balancing a secondary school timetable with her swimming commitments were immense. Amy recalls, "It was a grueling schedule, but my coaches were incredible. They pushed me to excel, and I became one of the top swimmers in the East District."

Her dedication paid off with a win at the Scottish Summer Meet in 2025, but instead of pursuing higher-level competitions, Amy chose a different path.

Finding Balance

"Winning the Scottish 50m was a reward for all my hard work, but I saw it as a culmination rather than a springboard. I wanted to experience university life fully, and that meant taking a break from the intense training regime," Amy explained.

While she still trains with the university swim team, the frequency and intensity have decreased significantly. Amy now has more time for herself and the opportunity to explore interests beyond swimming.

"The change has been liberating. I no longer feel the pressure to perform at the highest level, and I'm enjoying the freedom to pursue other passions. It's a refreshing perspective," she added.

Support and Growth

Amy's journey has been supported by the Scottish Borders Council's Athlete Support Programme, which has helped her develop both physically and mentally. A key aspect of this support was working with sports psychologist Brad Fullarton, who encouraged Amy to view her athletic career through a broader lens.

"Brad helped me understand that sport is just one part of life. It's essential to find a balance and enjoy the process," Amy reflected.

A Family of Athletes

Amy's athletic journey is deeply rooted in her family's sporting heritage. Her mother, Lucy, was a top hockey player in her youth, representing Scotland at age-grade levels, while her father, Paul, was a leading footballer for Gala Fairydean Rovers. Even her grandparents were accomplished athletes.

"Sport has always been a part of our family, but we believe in enjoying the journey. It's about the friendships, discipline, and self-belief that sports instill," Amy's mother, Lucy, shared.

Looking Ahead

While Amy acknowledges that the Commonwealth Games and Olympics are unlikely goals now, she remains passionate about a career in sports.

"I'm grateful for the opportunities swimming has given me, and I look forward to exploring new avenues within the sports industry. It's an exciting prospect," she said.

In conclusion, Amy's story is a reminder that athletic excellence is not the sole measure of success. It's about finding balance, enjoying the journey, and recognizing the broader benefits that sports bring to our lives.
